A perfect day

Yesterday the jet lag hit me (for some reason, it skipped a day). I hardly slept at all on Thurs. night, so on Fri. I was kind of in a daze the whole day; I had to lie down for a nap after I sat in on Paul's advanced class in the morning. The class was really neat. There were only three students, but they were very enthusiastic and spoke quite well. They asked me some questions about me and about America, and I helped with the lesson, which involved reading a text (ironically) about an English girl who went to Korea and had jet lag. :) I think I am going to take on the intermediate and advanced classes soon, because I've discovered that it will be very hard teaching the complete beginners without being able to speak any Thai with them. In the afternoon, Paul and I took off on the motorbike to get me an adapter for my computer and see the countryside. It was so fun! We went to a beautiful beach about 20 minutes from here. When we got back, everyone else from Step Ahead, plus a friend of theirs from church, and I went to the beach and threw the frisbee around and swam for a while. The water is the perfect temperature! The waves weren't too big. It is really hot in the afternoon, but it's been beautiful evenings- a nice breeze and not hot at all. In the evening, Taan, Ping, Paul and I had meat fondue, Thai style. Most of the restaurants are open air, and you just sit outdoors amongst the palm trees at these little wooden or wicker tables. It is gorgeous.

2nd day in Thailand

This place is amazing! I love it. I did so many fun things today:
-sat in on Paul's lesson and did a few conversation activities with the students
-one of his students taught me how to make phad thai (yummy!)
-went to the market with Benz and bought some flip-flops for about $1.25
-spoke German w/ a Thai girl who runs a shop just down the road
-learned lots of Thai words!
-prayed w/ everyone from the Step Ahead Center (we have devotions every morning)
-went running barefoot on the beach
-Paul taught me how to drive a scooter (um, sort of). I need some more practice :)
-visited a preschool that is also run by Step Ahead. I might teach some English classes there, too.
-ate green curry
Surprisingly, I haven't really had jet lag. I slept well last night, only woke up once in the middle of the night but then slept straight through 'til 6:30 this morning. I feel great. I love this place!! Did I mention that? I love it.

first day in Thailand

It sure was a long trip! 30 hours, or a bit more counting the drive from Phuket Airport. But I must say that God really comforted me on all my flights (5 of them, as a matter of fact), and I wasn't as nervous as I expected to be. Sat next to some interesting people, including a German lady with a very cute baby. It was really nice to speak some German. Singapore and Silk airlines were great! I also liked the Hong Kong airport. It was very pretty- surrounded by really tall mountains. So now I'm at the Step Ahead Center, which will be my new home for the next (at least) 6 months. It's great here. So many impressions of a new place all at once. We drove past a mosque, a Buddhist temple, a bunch of stray dogs, and a school bus w/ the back open and full of kids! The scenery is lush, green, and beautiful. It actually reminds me quite a bit of Florida. My co-workers at the Step Ahead Center are so wonderful and helpful; they've made me feel right at home. It was Benz's birthday today, so we had a birthday cake for her. Benz is the Thai staff girl who coordinates all sorts of things at Step Ahead, and Paul is the other teacher here; he's from England but grew up in Thailand for at least part of his life. The living quarters are really decent. The Step Ahead Center has three levels with the living quarters on the third, 2 classrooms on the 2nd, and a large common area with computers, a nice dining area, and a kitchen on the 1st. Ok, I've stayed up 'til night so I can hopefully minimize jet lag. I'm very tired now, signing off.

Second post

From my e-mail. :)  GB

my first post

Sam and Caroline are helping me set up my first blog! They are visiting me on my last weekend in Arkansas before I take off for Thailand. I'm flying out on Monday evening and will arrive around 2 p.m. (Thai time) on Wednesday in Phuket. The pictures are of the beach where I'll be going and some shorts that are readily available at the market in Khao Lak (pics courtesy of the British teacher at the Step Ahead Center).
